I like this take on things! Better than canon, actually--though to be fair, something written for pre-teens and teens really can't be all that deep, or most kids just won't like it, they'll find it "too boring". I've seen how often common beliefs are not true in real life, though, and I really like stories that come at things from different angles.

I especially like your take on Slytherin! Of course, that could be 'cause I tend to be more Slytherin than any other House...and Snape's my favorite character. >=]

Author's Response: Thanks ^^ I'm really glad that this backstory has received such a positive response; what you say about common beliefs is very true- most people seldom look at what they're told critically and, when you do the research, the conclusions which one can draw are often very different. Thanks for the review and I hope you continue to enjoy the story

the bit about mr nott teasing theo made me think im really glad of the way you did the death eater parents cos people make them really mean and dont really think of that terrorists and stuff are people to with people they love and stuff even if their nasty to other people. good story

Author's Response: Thanks. Yes, while there are some criminals who are equally brutal and cruel to their families, many have very different personas, depending on who they're with. Although it's not pleasant, dividing our fellow creatures into 'people' and 'non-people' is a practice stemming back into pre-history. A common example is a child who, whilst wolfing down beef with gusto, would go green at the very thought of eating horse; as the pony is considered 'people', i.e. a sentient creature with feelings, the child could not stomach eating it. The cow, on the other hand, is a 'non-person', meaning that the same scruples do not apply.

    "“Sweets”

“Kind of check” Draco gave a chocolaty grin.
    ...
“Dashing, smart and heroic leader” asked Draco.

“Check” Grinned Blaise, pointing to himself."

    Love

Author's Response: Thanks for the review. I love writing Draco and Blaise interaction, so I'm glad when people say that they enjoy reading it :)

I know it's not really relevant to this chapter in particular, but I'm re-reading, I forgot to review first time round, and I have to stop reading for now ( :( ), so I really have to say that I absolutely love your characterisation of Lucius in this fic- possibly my favourite aspect of the whole story for some reason. I mean, I love every bit of it, and I think the way you progressed the relationships between the characters (particularly Snape/Harry obviously) is fabulous, but Lucius is just how I want him to be; acting superior but in such a way as you can see why because he just so obviously is! And diplomatic with that dangerous edge that Snape has as well, which seems just so quintessentially Slytherin, but an absolute softy when it comes down to Draco and anyone he loves. This is getting ridiculously long, but I dislike fics which make him unloving and cruel and unlovable so much; he should be smart and ambitious and ultimately about family imo, not this just absolutely sadistic madman like Voldie.
    Anyway. >.<
    10/10

Author's Response: Thanks ^^ I'm really glad you've enjoyed this story and I'm happy that you like my portrayal of Lucius, he's one of my favourite characters to write, along with Draco, because there's such a delicious contrast between the astute, dangerous politician (his public persona) and the indulgent, loving, protective father (private persona). In the canon, we see glimpses of both personas but, because Harry is an antagonist, those glimpses are all we get, which is a shame. To me, Lucius and Draco are daddy leopard and baby leopard; Lucius, all regal demeanor, power and grace, with little Draco bouncing along at his heels, trying to look equally cool and sophisticated as he trips over his own paws!

This was an awesome story. I loved your take on all the Slytherins. It's nice to see them in a different light. I'm really looking forward to the sequel.

Author's Response: Thanks ^^ I'm really pleased you liked my depiction of the characters.

Bravo! A delightful retelling of year one. I really like it. ^^ Try not to keep us waiting too long for second year - I'm eager to see what happens.

Love the Snape & Harry moment, here. Again, well done!

Author's Response: Thanks ^^. I'm need to finish off a couple of other stories first (as I've kept the people reading those waiting way too long) but, I'm already in the process of plotting the sequel so, when I have time, I'll start updating again.

This story was really wonderful and is one of the best ones I've read! I can't wait for the sequel!

Author's Response: Thanks so much: I'm really glad you enjoyed it. (If you don't like Dumbledore much, you might enjoy one of my other fics, 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Pegasus' ;)

I like your explanation for how a Basilisk's stare "works". Very plausible.

Author's Response: Thanks: I thought it was a possible interpretation, given how snakes are symbols of wisdom. I'm glad you liked it ^^.

I, for one, rather like the way the characters are developing in this tale. I also have a tendency for re-crafting characters in way they *could* be. Furthermore, a lot of the Slytherins seem little more than wall-hangings in canon, making it rather easy to take license with their personalities and whatnot.

Well done, again, I'm still enjoying the tale. ^^

Author's Response: Thanks ^^  The lack of canon personality given to some of the Slytherins is really quite useful for fanfic purposes; I try to link up all the facts, though, so there's a reason why they might not have turned out so well without Harry. I'm glad that you're enjoying it and I hope you continue to do so
