Truly Hagrid shouldn't have kept Aragog at the school. Eventually, the acromantula might have attacked and killed someone. It was wrong of Tom to allow Hagrid to take the fall for Myrtle's death, but I really can't blame him for doing so. It's good to get some back story. I do have some questions about the Chamber, though...did Harry actually go there and find the basilisk or did Dumbledore plant the memories?

Author's Response: Thanks for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed the backstory: I really wanted to give an account of Tom Riddle's childhood which, while remaining true to canon events, shows his behaviour in a more human and understandable light. Your questions as to the chamber will be answered in the next few chapters; I'm afraid that, when you're writing an alternate history, it takes quite a while to unravel the kinks. However, the upside to that is the fic is going to be nice and long, which will please quite a few people from what I've read in their reviews ^^

This is a very interesting sort of "secret history" story with plenty of unusual background. Since I am firmly in the Dumbledore-was-no-saint camp, I'm enjoying your reasoning and rationale as well as little glimpses from "When the Boat Comes In."

    Author's Response:

Thanks; I'm really glad that you're enjoying it. This universe is, of course, different from that of 'When the Boat Comes In' but I do like to keep some important issues consistant, like Salazar's character and parentage (although, in this instance, his mother was Japanese rather than Saxon). I hope you'll continue to enjoy the back story; most of it's going to be explained but, as there's also going to be a lot of action when Harry returns to Hogwarts, some facts are going to come to light later as well.

Oh, the idea of Severus singing the Lay of Luthien (in Lan Rickman's phenomenal voice, of course) has made my night. Thank you for that.

Author's Response: Thanks ^^ I thought that it was quite fitting, seeing the Gandalf/Saruman metaphor, and, as you said, AR's voice would really do it justice ^^
