It is hard for me to grasp Tim's disconnect--one sentence he says that may have been the first time Severus helped him, the next that the baby isn't him.
The line about everyone pretending to care is disheartening, as I assume it not only includes Severus (which I can get--he isn't the same person as his "guardian angel") but his family too.

In the symbolism of the dream, the baby carries many of Tim's traumatic memories..
It is common for abuse survivors to be unable to connect with parts of themselves. Identity is very fluid--it only seems stable because of our tricks of memory.
Sadly the belief that people are only pretending to care is also common among abuse survivors.
