Reviews For Building Doors
This is a great chapter! The choice of barrister feels really significant. If he'd just been letting himself go with the flow like always, he would've allowed himself to be shunted back to Silver's. But for the first time, he's made his own decision... and I think there will be consequences. :3
This fic was incredible. My heart was utterly broken after Harry's trial did not go his way. I was upset with Dumbledore. I was upset with Podmore, who I thought I liked, and then despite being made at Snape I found myself hopeful things would be okay when he said he was going to take Harry. Then for a good long while any time Snape and Harry had a disagreement or when Dumbledore tried to dote on Harry and Harry would think it was only because he had to I was struck with another paralyzing bout of heartache and tears because no child should ever feel that way. It just felt so unjust. Dumbledore wasn't understanding Harry's need to be reassured that he was loved. Snape was expecting the worst and being an absolute dick about it. Gosh. Harry having those two shirts from the Quidditch Expo and then Snape making him feel bad just tore me up. I had to cry and stare at a ceiling for a while to recompose myself. I was so upset. I was glad he and Dumbledore had a serious talk about the Quidditch Expo to set both of them on a better path. I don't know what I would have done if that had continued for much longer. The trip to the Alleys was much needed. As it continued into the school year with the dementors I loved seeing the differences from the book, like the thestrals instead of hippogriffs. I'm a glutton for hurt/comfort so all of Harry's contact with the dementors and him having tough lessons with Lupin was such a great tool for getting Harry to get close to Snape. I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting for the hug and when it finally came after the citations I was just, ahh 😆, so pleased. What a relief. And then as Silver said they'd been preparing for decades or more for this eventuality I was finally feeling lighter because it felt like there would be justice for Harry and for the fae folk. Harry running away from school because of the adoption suggestion was a surprise and I was so sure Sirius would be at the house, so when he wasn't there, I felt just as disappointed as Harry. It was a relief when Albus turned up and guessed the password. I was so happy for another actual hug from Snape when the returned and that McGonogall was there too. I do not often get so invested in OCs but all of these characters were so well written and incorporated. All the legalese and business dealings felt very real as well, though I have no idea on the accuracy, nor do I truly think it matters. This version of Harry was very compelling and had me reading into the early hours of the morning three nights in a row. Incredible story! Oh! And random but my favorite line was from a few chapters back when Snape quoted the legal piece of paper Podmore had given him about not being able to keep him from work or educational opportunities. That had me rolling for a good minute because it was absolutely something he would remember and bring back up. Thank you so much for this absolute joy of a story. Author's Response: Awe, thanks so much! I'm so glad you liked it! The sequel is posted, but not yet finished, though there's a good bit there in the sequel to continue on with, and it picks up right after this story ends. I hope you enjoy the sequel as well if you decide to take a look!
Thanks a lot for sharing your story!
Sounds as though I might be of the minority opinion here, but I appreciate Dumbledore having the opportunity to try to explain himself. I don't feel his behavior can be excused, however his attempts to explain should provide interesting insight into your Dumbledore. A Dumbledore who walks the complicated path between "flawed but caring" and "sociopathically manipulative" without actually falling to either side. I expect that Harry will keep him on his toes, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I love the view of life in the Alleys we're getting here. Though, I'm a big fan of slice of life/worldbuilding. And I love how you're opening up the world outside both the canon and fanon narratives. Brilliant work, Author.
You are quite the storyteller.
Leaving aside that, according to the canon, he didn't even know about it at that point, upon such a statement the question immediately arises: why haven't the Auror's Office been notified yet, how comes this information wasn't on wanted banners among the signs by which Black could've been identified? So turns out Dumbledore was keeping information from the investigation, concerning reputed mass murderer who is hunting the child under his care — this is a huge blunder. Also, if he began to suspect that Harry lived with a murderer the day before, how comes he had put no safety measures, had done nothing at all to extract the child from that company, but had let him spend another night like that? It should've opened up huge opportunities to prove what sort of a guardian this Dumbledore was, he was digging himself into a hole revealing such info in this manner. Yet instead of winning the case Podmore quitted??.. Even if both of Harry's barristers failed to proceed this issue, there were other authorities present who should've questioned the headmaster... So.. it was a huge dissapointment, this twist. Though I'm still going to continue reading, pretending Harry ended up with a similar court decision but due to his own failure in court, he's not even 13 after all, this would be more than plausible. Sorry if my feedback was not a pleasure to read, it's just I really got into the story, and started to take the trial quite emotionally — but that's much due to your writing skills, dear author :D so I'd like to thank you as well. Hope you will continue to do what you're doing, you create believable live characters and nice catching plot, not too slow and detailed but also not too superficial and sketchy. Wish you the best of luck! |
